長く関わるベビーベッド Crib for longtime use

ベビーベッドが必要になった時、購入しようかリースにしようか、悩んだ。

赤ちゃんがベビーベッドで寝る期間はせいぜい10ヶ月だけど、ベビーベッドは赤ちゃんがこの世に生まれて最初に心と身体を育む大事な場所。家具のような部屋のような家のような、いわば小さな建築でもある。なので借りものではない、愛着の持てるしっかりしたものを用意してあげたい気もした。でも10ヶ月のためだけだとやはりもったいないし、いずれ手放し物心ついた時には、おそらくベビーベッドで過ごした記憶はなくなるだろうことを考えると少し残念な気もする。

そこで、ベビーベッドとして関わった後、子供の成長に合わせて転用しながら、長く関われる仕掛けの家具はないか？と探したが、結局見つからなかったので、図面を描いて大工さんにつくってもらうことにした。

0歳の間はベビーベッドとして、

1歳から5歳くらいはおもちゃ箱や遊び場所やお昼寝スペースとして、

6歳からは少し改変し勉強机としても、

その後はローテーブルや座卓として活用できる。

多用途に使うとなると、シンプルな箱型が良い。

後からフタをつけたり、脚を付けたり外したり、改変しやすいように、無垢の木でつくることにした。樹種は軽くて丈夫で肌触りの良い、サワラやヒノキやスギ。

子供が成長して、おもちゃ箱や勉強机として、身体を通して関わっているその家具が、意識的な記憶にはほとんど無いけれど、自分自身が生まれた時に最初に過ごしたベビーベッドでもあった、という身体的な記憶の連続性のようなものがあることは、良いことのような気がする。

When I needed a crib, I struggled with whether to buy or lease. A baby only sleeps in a crib for 10 months at most, but the crib is an important place for a baby to develop their mind and body for the first time after they are born into this world. It’s a small piece of architecture, like a room and a house, like furniture. So instead of borrowing something, I wanted to get her something solid that she could be attached to. However, it would be a waste if it was just for 10 months, and I feel a little disappointed considering that by the time I get older, I probably won’t have any memories of spending time in the crib.

So, is there any furniture that can be used for a long time, by being used as a crib and then repurposed as the child grows? I looked for it, but couldn’t find it, so I decided to draw a diagram and have a carpenter build it for me.

Use as a crib during 0 years old.

For ages 1 to 5, it can be used as a toy box, play area, or nap area.

From the age of 6, it has been slightly modified and can also be used as a study desk.

After that, it can be used as a low table or low table.

When it comes to using it for multiple purposes, a simple box shape is best. I decided to make it from solid wood so that it would be easy to modify later by attaching a lid or adding or removing legs. The tree species are Japanese Spanish mackerel, Japanese cypress, and cedar, which are light, durable, and have a pleasant texture.

When a child grows up, the furniture that they interact with through their bodies, such as their toy box or study desk, is barely a conscious memory, but it is also the body in which they first spent time in the crib when they were born. I feel like it’s a good thing to have a continuity of memories.
