Horizontal Window and Skipfloors House

<Mountain scenery and life>

When I was a student studying aesthetics in the philosophy department, this was the home of a friend from an art club and his family. From several candidate sites, a site with open views was chosen, located in Sakai, a residential area and an urbanization control zone. How should the scenery of Mt. Katsuragi be related to life at home? It would be bad if the sublimity of the mountains stole our spirits and made us neglect our daily lives, but the scenery of the mountains is captivating.

Therefore, we decided to create several floors at different heights for the horizontal windows, giving different views to each location. The quality of each place is created by the relationship between the individual scenery, furniture, people, and the state of the people sitting, lying, or standing. The mood of the person who feels outside changes with the life inside. For example, when working in the kitchen, you can see a view of the foot of the mountain, the townscape, and the rice fields that give you a sense of local life, and when you sit in the dining room and enjoy a leisurely meal, you can see the peaceful scenery of the entire mountain and rice fields. When I go up to the catwalk to pick up a book, I can see the nearby field work and the parking lot, and when I sit on the sofa and quietly think, I see an abstract view of the mountains and sky. A space studded with a wide variety of qualities that emerge from each place through the overlapping of similar consciousness that emerges from the outside scenery and the inside activities of daily life.

In the sofa space, when you stand up, you can see a life-like view, and when you sit down, the view changes to an abstract view of mountains and sky, but the rapid change in scenery as you move from standing to sitting gives the impression that the mountains are moving. , or a strange feeling of being transported to another world. This is a theory of visual magic that looks different, which Colin Rowe pointed out as an ‘Phenomenal Transparency’, regarding the horizontal windows seen from the outside in Villa Stein house designed by Le Corbusier. It seems to be an inverted form.

When I thought about how to view mountain scenery, I vaguely had in mind the borrowed scenery of Entsu-ji Temple, but Entsu-ji used the illusion of perspective to liberate our perception from the object and to see the mountain as an Thing-in-itself. If this creates an effect that can be called meditative, giving a feeling of movement, in this house, a similar effect may have been created in the sofa space due to the illusion of movement.
